Slugs & Snails

I'm very excited to write this post! Mostly because as the Mummy to a little boy I really do get irratated by the disproportionate amount of girls v boys clothes you can get in the shops. Every time I go to look for something for my son to wear, the choice for boys is usually only displayed in 1/3rd of the floor space that girls clothing gets. It's common practice for shops to fill out their boys clothing with more of the same item, where as in the girls clothes section there is much more variety to pick from. Speaking to other mummies I know I am not alone in this frustration!

Ever since Josh was little I've loved to dress him in leggings. They are comfortable and practical and just so easy to dress him in for around the house etc too. When he was little it was easy, boys can get baby leggings now, although basic in style/variation and occassionally I would buy him a pair of jeggings too (which may I add, I could only get in the girls section grrr) however as he's got older the lack of leg wear options has proved difficult. For full length leg wear a pair of jeans or combat style trousers is about as much choice as you can get, especially when your child reaches the toddler stage and beyond. I don't like Josh wearing jeans when we are only chilling at home so this was driving me mad searching for alternatives.

Until (drum roll please) I found out about Slugs and Snails. A brand which produce boys tights. Yes, you read that correctly, boys tights.  I'm not going to say that I immediately fell in love, because my first thoughts were well, that boys wearing tights was a bit odd to me. Foreign-I guess would be the word (not European foreign, more unheard of foreign, got it?!) So I had a look on the website and the designs seemed really nice and boyish. I didn't instantly make a decesion, but did think about it a little and as I watched Joshua running around in a vest a few days later, I noticed how cold his feet were. So then I decided I would give them a go.

The tights themselves are exactly as you would expect, just imagine girls tights with boy friendly patterns and colours! They are soft, comfy and flexible and when ours arrived I was so excited to see Joshua in them, in fact I stripped his jeans off him and put him in them right away! It was almost like when the women burnt their bras except we were removing the jeans in liberation to the oppression caused by denim trousers! Horrah!

Joshua now wears his tights regularly, almost daily, in fact if we are at home chilling out then he has them on. They keep him warm, but yet never warm him too much that he gets hot and most of all he's so comfortable in them. On the Slugs and Snails website they say about the key aspects of boys tights is allowing the freedom to move. Josh is such an active toddler, which is one of the reasons I don't like him always in jeans so these tights give me the confidence that they will move with him, and allow him the freedom to move and play (and run and cause havoc!) unrestricted which is the whole point of being a toddler isn't it?

The patterns themselves would cause no confusion with girls tights, you wouldn't dress your little girl in these so likewise you don't need to worry that your little boy will look like a little girl in these (that was my other half's worry, not mine may I add as you all know my thoughts on this after reading my post a few days ago!) And unlike little girls tights, the pattern doesn't stop at the knee, it goes all the way up so they can be worn alone or underneath shorts/dungarees etc. As of yet we haven't worn ours underneath anything but I really do like the idea of them underneath shorts/dungarees with his converse and a funky t-shirt, so rock and roll! They also have non slip soles which does add some degree of help on slippery floors, our kitchen floor is a nightmare for slipping and these give Josh that little bit extra support.

The also have a lot of strecth in them without compromising the colours and designs. By this I mean that they will stretch to accomodate a nappy, no matter how padded it may be without loosing shape or stretching to the point where the pattern becomes disproportionate either. This is always a bonus!
Josh & Buzz playing 'out of space'
Something else lots of mummies will be able to relate to is the whole lost sock thing, I literally think that the borrowers have moved in and are stealing Josh's socks for themselves. We go through so many socks which are never a pair again after one wear, I literally have no idea where they go. How many times have you been out and looked down to see a chubbly, beautiful face staring up at you while pointing to one socked covered foot and one bare foot. My sons face always reads "look Mummy, I don't know where it's gone, but I promise it wasn't my fault teehee" when he does this. Having the tights removes my constant need to buy socks, I swear I could pay for a mortgage with the amount of money I spend replacing socks for Joshua!
Some of the designs you can get from Slugs & Snails-Joshua has all of these!
So although I was initially sceptacal, as I'm sure you may be reading this, I can honestly say boys tights are the way forward! There's a huge gap in the market for boys legwear (as we all know) and Slugs and Snails are doing an excellent job at filling it. To me I use them like leggings with Josh and even his Daddy loves how cute he looks in them! Soon as we get home these days the jeans come off and the tights go on!

So if you have a little boy up to the age of three who is in need of some extra leg wear clothing options then I can't recommend enough that you check out the Slugs and Snail website. You honestly won't regret it, even if you just buy them to be worn around the home. One thing is for sure, Josh loves his and so do I.

Conclusion? Converted!

Love Chloe xx

  1. They are very cute! I might invest :-) I know what you mean about boys clothes, most of my friends have little girls and I'm so jealous of all the adorable outfits. But I have just found some super cute clothes at Boden, little bit pricier than I would usually go for, but for a few really lovely things I think it's ok :-)

  2. I know exactly how you feel about the shopping for boys clothes. It infuriates me that there is so little choice for boys, when girls have too much. The idea of boys tights is a great one, though I doubt m-d would agree. Mine all used to wear cotton footed trousers under their proper trousers when cold or just indoors, if I got them dressed at all if we were just at home!

  4. I am always blogging about this subject.. I've been buying Ethan tights since he was a few months old. He's still happy to wear them now and he's 3 in July. They are fab in winter under clothes, or chilling out in at home. x
