When Josh was little I bought him a mini ball pit and we used to sit him up in his bumbo and the colours of the contents would always make his eyes dance. One of the brilliant features of the pit was a bendy mirror that was attached at one side. Josh would spend ages trying to figure it out and it wasn't long before his fascination with mirrors kicked in!
I know all babies are intriguied by mirrors but Josh seems to have an extra special place in his heart for mirrors. Mostly because he seems to love looking at himself! Yup that's right, my toddler is vain. *cue 'You're So Vain, I bet you think this song is about you..."*
He just seems to love looking at himself! He's probably learnt this from his daddy, seems as though all those times we sit around waiting for daddy to preen himself just enough to pop to the supermarket hasn't quite gone un-noticed by my clearly observant child. We have a long mirror in our bedroom and when ever Josh goes in their it's all his interested in. He goes up to it and seems a bit coy at first, bashful even. Batting his long eyelashes at his beautiful reflection he then gets very excited and starts chitter chattering in his toddler gibberish. After this comes the dancing/bouncing as if he's trying to impress his reflection. And then comes the kisses and him trying to look in to the mirror while it's pressed against his face. It's like some sort of mating ritual! Same thing every time and I'm still not sure if he realises it's his own reflection or thinks it genuinely is another person!
His curiosity is so intense that he makes a break for our bedroom every time he possibly can and it's amazing how quickly his little legs carry him when he thinks he's got a chance at getting to the mirror! If I turn my back for a second and we are in close enough proximaty to the bedroom then he's in there starting the mating ritual all over again! It reminds me of the mad dash a prisoner would make if wanting to escape from the guards!
The rest of our house is pretty much mirrorless for Josh as all of our other mirrors are hanging on walls so he doesn't get to see himself in them much but his other favourite is the oven. He will stand infront of it dancing and flirting with his reflection and his newest favourite is to spin around and around until he's dizzy as if he's showing off to impress this reflected 'friend'. However my oven does seem to take offence at this as every time I look at it it's covered in handprints which scream at me for allowing him to indulge in his vanity with it's reflective door. As if 'how dare you let his fingers near my steel'. Oh well, keeps him busy!
Is my son the only toddler with a vanity obsession or is your child the same? Cute as it is I think I may need to begin teaching him the errors of his ways soon. Because lets face it just jigging up and down like tigger is not going to be enough flirting to get him the following kiss from the ladies when he's older. I think the mirror gives it up too easily!
Love Chloe xx

Certainly isn't the only one, Alex would stand in front of one for ages, posing and pulling faces!
ReplyDeleteSeb adores the mirror in our bedroom too. We have a weird layout here and our lounge is next to your bedroom and he throws a huge paddy if we don't allow in into our room to pose!He also loves to look at photos of himself.

ReplyDeleteYES I have a vain child. She is also a complete flirt and old lady charmer too. The only thing that can calm her grumps down is looking at phototgraphs of herself. Sigh..........x
